Norwich bills itself as a “Fine City” on signs as you approach it from many directions. It is the UNESCO City of Literature too and many famous authors studied here, at the UEA.
Kazuo Ishiguro is one; with novels like “Never Let Me Go” set in Cromer and parts of North Norfolk. Ian McEwan is another – he of “Atonement” fame; whilst a more recent author is John Boyne, writer of the moving Holocaust novel “Boy in the Striped Pyjamas”.
We’ll come to that.
You may be thinking why is a local Norwich drain company giving us a potted history of the UEA and the city?
John Boyne was inspired to write about Bruno and Schmuel in World War Two because he looked out of his bedroom window and saw fences.
Fences to him symbolised entrapment and if you’ve read the novel or watched the film, you’ll know a friendship is struck between two young boys with a fence separating them.
Bruno is the son of the Camp Commandant; Schmuel is a Jewish concentration camp inmate.
Despite this macabre association, the triangle that forms gold in Norwich is concentrated on Earlham Road, Unthank Road and Newmarket Road.
It is referred to as Notting Hill as it does have a very metropolitan feel with its mixture of sturdy Victorian terraced homes and grand Edwardian villas.
The Golden Triangle is a place I love working in.
There’s so much history to the area and, believe it or not, I find the drainage system there interesting!
I seriously do.
The Victorians were fantastic engineers, but as time has marched on, the plumbing they put in place often develops faults.
Drains and pipes crack. They leak.
Small problems can quickly develop into big ones. If you don’t tackle problems like this, you could end up with flooding, foul odours, structural damage, and water ingress that can cause subsidence.
At Darren’s Drains, we specialise in drain repairs across Norwich and the wider areas of Norfolk and Suffolk.
Drain lining Norwich is in fact one of our main services.
We use a no-dig approach where drains are inspected by cameras, faults diagnosed and the drain is relined. In effect, this means creating a drain within the existing drain. This will last for decades too as technology in 2021 is far more advanced than in 1821.
